Week 1: During this week, the children will enjoy their hook day where they will come to school dressed as a Sports personality and take part in a carousel of activities. In Literacy, the focus will be on biographies with the children reading and analysing a range of these to find out about the information contained and the language and layout required for this genre. They will explore the circulatory system in science and consider its importance in the human body. Practicing for our performance will start this week and the children will continue to learn the songs related to it.
Week 2: The focus of science this week will be what constitutes a healthy balanced diet and how the nutrients in various food groups are important for different purposes. In Literacy, the children will apply their learning to planning, researching and drafting a biography of their chosen sporting personality. They will use their observation skills to develop their artistic talents, by recording the human form and practicing drawing figures in action using stick figures and ovals.
Week 3 and 4: Staying safe and being healthy is the focus in science for these two weeks and the children will learn about the dangers of drug, tobacco and alcohol misuse. They will begin to have sessions covering Sex Education - further details to follow on a separate letter. Having edited and completed a final version of their biographies, the children will turn their attention to using the scientific knowledge they have gained to plan, create and publish a leaflet with the purposes of explaining how to live a healthy life and persuading their readers to do so. Following on from the previous week, the children will now turn their figures in art into a picture of a sequence of actions using different mediums.
Week 5/6: During these last weeks, the children will be busy refining their performance of ‘Reach for the Sky’. The performance will take place on Tuesday 11thJuly and Wednesday 12th July so please be ready to book your tickets! You will be further encouraged by the persuasive posters and rave reviews that the children write as they further develop their persuasive skills in Literacy. At the same time, the Year sixes will be preparing their leaver’s assembly – happy, upbeat songs only you will be relieved to hear, so no need for the tissues!
Take Home Task - Using what they have learnt in Science lessons, the children will design and produce a guide on 'How to be healthy in a week' Any method of presentation, such as a poster, leaflet, power-point or a fact sheet will be acceptable.
Success Criteria: Research about healthy living, dietary needs and exercise and present the information in a clear and meaningful way.
