Welcome to Sun Class website page!
Let the Games Begin!
The children will be introduced to the Ancient Greeks, understanding when in history they were at their most prominent and through geography where they resided. Following on from this, they will begin to learn about mythological stories, focussing on Theseus and the Minotaur, and profiling the hero of the myth.
Continuing to explore Theseus and the Minotaur, the children will start to capture the myth using story maps and dramatisation. They will take part in a Minotaur Day which will encapsulate them into the world of mythological beasts, building up their vocabulary banks and drawing some of these creatures. We will also be introducing the children to the origins of the Olympic Games, designing and making our own team flames, wreaths and flags.
This week, as innovators, the children will be developing their own ideas for a Greek myth and starting to think about the vocabulary they would like to add to make this writing adventurous and exciting. During the afternoons, the children will be researching Greek Gods, which were worshipped and learn about the relevance they had to the lives of the Greeks. The children will start this week on their final scientific topic of the year; magnets, which were supposedly discovered by a Greek shepherd called Magnes.
Hook Week! To celebrate our work on Ancient Greece, we will be holding our own Olympic Games at Yeovil’s Bill Whistlecroft Athletics Arena! The children will take part in an opening ceremony, classic track and field events, finishing with a closing ceremony using the props that we have made in class. The day will finish with a Greek tasting experience and the children will paint their own Olympic photographs. Myths will continue to be the focus for our story writing as the children begin to write their own, focussing on the dramatic opening, setting and character descriptions they have sampled through the story of Theseus and the Minotaur.
Using the skills they have developed so far, they will continue to write their own mythological stories, developing and editing their battle scenes and ending. This week will also see the children designing their own Greek pots and creating these using clay.
In our final week, the children will be editing, publishing and illustrating their finished mythological stories, as well as completing their portfolios with examples of their best work across the year.
How you can support your child at home:
Regular reading – we recommend aiming to set aside time every day
- this half term sharing fairy stories is a lovely idea!
Learning of times tables facts
Learning spelling words from the Read, Write, Inc log book - for those with them
Our days will continue with sessions focusing upon spelling and phonics to improve our knowledge and understanding of the tricky English language. Some of the children will have a log book that should move between home and school on a daily basis. Children will log their spelling focuses in this book and any support at home to practise these spellings will provide endless benefits for your child’s progression. If you have any queries, don’t hesitate to come and discuss this new spelling approach with us!
Supporting your child at home is crucial. Maths homework will be handed out on a Friday and is collected in the following Wednesday. There is a Homework Club for anyone who prefers to do their homework at school or needs a little help with it. We would also like you to share books at home every day if possible and talk about them. This should be recorded and a signature written in their Reading Record. Guided reading will take place 4 times a week and be this will be signed in their record by the adult leading your child's group. Please ensure your child has their Reading Record with them every day.
Times Table Olympics
Times table knowledge is a key focus for development in mathematics. Quick recall of times table facts up to 12 x 12 will really help your child progress in maths. The children will know which times table they are currently focusing on. We only move up to the next level when we can answer all questions correctly - because after all, practice makes perfect!
PE in Sun Class
PE days will be Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure that the children have correct kit in school on these days and that long hair is tied back. We do not allow the children to wear earrings for PE so please can they be removed on these days or taped.
Thank you for visiting our web page. If you have any concerns please feel free to catch me on the playground, before or after school!
