Welcome to Moon Class!

Body Matters!

Week 1

The visit to @Bristol will get this learning experience off to an exciting start with the participation in a workshop and show about the body!  Back at school, the children will investigate the effect that different liquids have on teeth, using this as stimulus for their writing.  They will learn the importance of making accurate observations and begin a week of recording these before studying the naming and functions of teeth.

Week 2

To reinforce the work on teeth, a dentist will visit the school to talk to the children about how to care for their own teeth and find out what happens if they do not brush them, or look after them!  The scientific focus for this week will move to sound: how the ear is designed to receive sound, as well as how sounds are made and how they travel through a medium to the ear.  English and science will be intertwined with a focus on the analysis of the results and how to draw conclusions from them.

Week 3

Moving on in their understanding of the human body, the children will find out about the human skeleton, comparing it to that of other animals and suggesting possible explanations for any similarities and differences.  English for the rest of the experience will explore different forms of poetry; writing poems linked to the body and how to perform them, beginning with free verse.

Week 4

The human digestive system is under scrutiny this week, as the children learn the names of the different organs involved in digestion and their functions.  They will be challenged with creating a mock digestive system which will give them as ‘real’ an experience as we can to help them understand how it works.  Poetry will move on to explore Kennings with the children experimenting in creating and performing their own.

Week 5

To finalise the experience, the children will choose an aspect of the body they would like to focus on and create a leaflet about it.  They will be publishing work ready for their portfolios which need to form the focus for the last week of term so that they can come home to be shared!

How you can support your child at home:

Talk about E-safety.

Discuss and find out about the organs of the body, the skeleton and teeth.

Read poems together and look at the different forms of poetry.

Regular reading - we recommend five times a week.

Learning of times tables facts from x1 to x12.

Learning spelling words from the Read, Write, Inc log book - for those with them.

Our PE lessons take place on Tuesdays (swimming has now stopped).  Please ensure you have your PE kits in school, including outdoor footwear, as well as outdoor PE kit and tape to cover earrings and studs. Long hair is to be tied up for safety reasons.
