Intent

The 2014 National Curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all children:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

At Wincanton Primary School, our intent is:

  • Enable children to develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and co-ordination.
  • Encourage children to work and play with others in a range of group situations.
  • Develop the way children perform skills and apply rules and conventions for different activities.
  • Show children how to improve the quality and control of their performance.
  • Teach children to recognise and describe how their bodies feel during exercise.
  • Develop the children’s enjoyment of physical activity through creativity and imagination.
  • Develop an understanding in children of how to succeed in a range of physical activities and how to evaluate their own success.
  • Assess pupils learning, analyse and interpret the results to inform future planning and lessons.

Implementation:

Children at Wincanton Primary School receive 2 hours of quality first teaching by both teachers and external sports coaches provided by Premier Sports.  Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses.

There are opportunities for children to engage in extra-curricular activities after school by both staff and Premier Sports. To increase participation, children were asked which clubs they would like to attend. There are also additional opportunities through our partnership with SASP to participate in competitive sport events with other local primary schools.

In the summer term, the children build upon their teamwork skills through non-competitive sports day in both KS1 and KS2, with KS2 also having a competitive competition focusing on track and field events.

EYFS also have their own sports day which link in with the ELG of their curriculum.

Year’s 4,5 and 6 take part in a 12 week swimming programme throughout the year at Wincanton Sports Centre taught by both staff at Wincanton Primary School and trained swimming coaches. Assessments and tracking of the children progress over these 12 weeks are collected and retained in preparation for the next year.

Impact:

Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. Our impact is therefore to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives.
