PE

Intent:

At Wincanton Primary School, our intent is:

  • Enable children to develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and co-ordination.
  • Encourage children to work and play with others in a range of group situations.
  • Develop the way children perform skills and apply rules and conventions for different activities.
  • Show children how to improve the quality and control of their performance.
  • Teach children to recognise and describe how their bodies feel during exercise.
  • Develop the children’s enjoyment of physical activity through creativity and imagination.
  • Develop an understanding in children of how to succeed in a range of physical activities and how to evaluate their own success.
  • Assess pupils learning, analyse and interpret the results to inform future planning and lessons.

Implementation:

All pupils at Wincanton Primary School receive 2 hours of PE each week by teachers and trained sports coaches from Premier Sports. Our PE programmes covers: invasion style games, multi skills, gymnastics, dance, striking & field activities, athletics and outdoor learning activities. This enables the children to participate in a range of physical activities, be active for sustained periods of time and constantly building on the skills they have been taught in previous years to help enhance their sporting performance.

Year 4,5 and 6 all complete a 12-week swimming programme across a year which is taught by staff at Wincanton Primary School and trained swimming coaches. The course enables pupils to use a range of strokes effectively in the water, to have a deeper understanding of what water safety is and how to perform self-rescue techniques in different water-based situations, as well being able to swim a distance of 25m confidently. The pupils progress is tracked each week and they are formally assessed at the end of each block of swimming.

Across the year, both KS1 and KS2 are provided with a wide selection of afterschool clubs, which are led by both teachers and Premier Sport Coaches. In addition, the school has a strong connection with SASP and attend regular competitions that are held at King Arthur’s Secondary School. This allows the children to participate in competitive sporting activities outside of school.

Impact:

The PE taught at Wincanton Primary School enables the children to participate in a range of non-competitive and competitive sports. This actively encourages pupils to participate in sporting activities outside of school. The children gain an understanding of why it is important to be physically active and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, we prioritise on the children becoming familiar with how to self-evaluate their own sporting performance and recognising what they need to do next to help improve their performance.

We finish on Wednesday 24th July for the Summer break and return to school on Wednesday 4th September 2024.
